The people who collect baseball cards will always tell you that the value is in the condition of the cards themselves. Well, that and the age and rarity of the piece. That is why they will always protect their investments in baseball card cases made of a hard resin or plastic. They cannot afford to let anything ruin their collections.
Collectors have a variety of reasons for keeping their cards as safe and as untouched as possible. Anytime they lose a little bit of their value it is always due to the condition degrading in some way. Whether it is because of the weather, like moisture or humidity. Or if it is due to simple negligence, like storing them in a basement that is prone to flooding.
When they start to get a rather large collection it always seems to be right around when that kids starts getting older. It is usually when they are slowly starting to move away from these somewhat childish things and into more mature things. Or at least, that is what they think and how they see it then, during that time in their lives.
Some of the things that certain collectors have put together over the years can just shock someone. The cards from back in the 1900's or even the 1950's or 60's are amazing to actually look at. The differences in how they were made is astonishing. To see specimens like that which are still in near perfect shape is unbelievable.
This is when they put the things away in cases and in boxes. In order to keep these things safe from damage or from the environment. So many collectors have lost a ton of things worth who knows how much in simple basement flood. All because they neglected to think that something bad could happen to them and their collections.
Some people look for these for years and years. When they finally find the ones they are looking for it can be like a dream come true. This and all the other reasons above is why they do not take any chances with where they store their treasures. Because they are just that to these people, they are a treasure to them for sure.
For the collectors who have spent a large portion of their lives doing this they would be completely crazy to let something happen to the things that are worth so much in their lives. That is why they will do whatever they can to protect the value of their stores. The condition dictates the value and it would be stupid to allow the condition to deteriorate.
Baseball card cases are the one thing that can keep those individual dreams alive. They can protect single cards or whole sets of them. They keep them safe from water, from the air and even some of them, from fire too. It is just a matter of how much protection they need and want for the one thing that they enjoy more than anything else. They often feel like they have no other choice but to protect them just like this, as best they can.
